More about Arkansas

Arkansas has more than 50 state parks for camping and outdoor recreation. Fishing, canoeing, and all sorts of water sports are especially popular on the Buffalo River. You can also tour historic districts in the major cities or pick a road for a scenic drive.

Although the Ozark Mountains may be more widely known, the Ouachitas offer some fascinating natural curiosities. In and around the city of Hot Springs, hydrothermal activity generates 40 springs of clear, hot water. To the south is an unusual diamond-bearing volcanic vein that is exposed at the surface near Murfreesboro.

In the gentle hills of southwestern Arkansas, forests of pine and white oak surround pastures and crop fields. But the Delta region along the Mississippi River is the most fertile land in the state. This lowland region was once covered by impenetrable swamps. Today much of the swampland has been drained, and vast rice fields have been planted. After harvest, farmers flood the fields, which attracts thousands of ducks to feed on the leftover grain.

In the remaining swamplands, bald cypress stand in murky waters. Portions of this wetland region are protected by reserves, which provide habitat for wildlife such as black bears, cougars, beavers, otters, and bobcats.
